WebMail Access Problems

Had a client contact me and said he was unable to access his e-mail via WebMail - kept getting an access error. Of course, the first words out of his mouth was that it was a problem with my mail server. I tried using his access information and (of course) had no problem getting to his inbox. Nothing strange there because computers are afraid of geeks and never act up. Then, just for grins, I tried accessing his WebMail using the same browser (Internet Explorer) he was using (I prefer Google Chrome) and sure enough I had the exact same problem he was. After much checking and troubleshooting (turning off the firewall, clearing the cache, etc.) I decided to do a google and see if anyone else was having problems.

Turns out Internet Explorer (Billy Gates' Microsoft browser) causes such problems with a number of major mail servers. In fact the solution to the problem was found in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. For any of you that may have experienced a problem accessing your e-mail from a browser (on the Internet) there's an easy fix. Just click on the second "Fix It" button (see graphic below) at this location:

Pigeon Update

Some days ago, Google released a significant update to its local search algorithm. The unofficial name of that update is "Pigeon". The algorithm update changes the local search results on Google. How does this affect your rankings and what do you have to do? Google aims to provide more useful, relevant and accurate local search results. The changes are visible on the regular web search results page and the results page of Google Maps.

Although Google did not reveal the details, the new ranking algorithm now uses ranking signals that are used in regular web search. The local search results are tied more closely to the regular web search ranking signals. Google also tried to improve the distance and location ranking parameters.

How will this change affect your Web site rankings? So far the new algorithm has led to the following changes:

  • Local directory sites get better visibility in Google's search results. For example, Yelp.com pages can now be seen at the top of the search results if the search query contains the word "Yelp". If you still haven't enrolled with Yelp and TripAdvisor you're missing out on this portion of the Google update.

  • For some searches (hotels, restaurants, bed and breakfasts), individual local businesses seem to be listed in the carousel at the top of the search results page. Below that, you will get directory style web pages. Individual local business pages are moved to results page two.

  • For other searches (pizza delivery), the first results page mainly shows individual businesses.

We've always constructed Web sites to have strong SEO signals (good content, many backlinks, valid descriptions, etc.) so this algorithm update may lead to higher rankings for your site.

Is Your Site Discouraging Mobile Visitors?

With mobile device usage skyrocketing, a mobile-friendly Web pages are practically essential. A mobile site means your customers can access information on the go, wherever they may be. It also means they’ll be more likely to share your site with friends, since they’ll be able to pull it up and show it to others, even when not at a computer.

Smaller screens, unfamiliar interfaces and slower load times are but a few of the obstacles facing mobile device users. A study revealed that 23 percent of mobile users have cursed at their devices while making a purchase; 11 percent have screamed at their devices and 4 percent of mobile shoppers have actually thrown their devices when things didn’t go as planned.

The time hasn't yet arrived where we suggest shutting down your Web site and jumping into mobile 100 percent. But it is time for providing visitors with multichannel engagement — testing the waters to find ways of augmenting sales and reservations through mobile. Augmenting sales through the mobile channel rather than relying on sales directly from mobile shoppers is the best approach to take in the current environment.

Most of today’s smartphone and tablet users rely on their devices for searching, browsing and gathering information, and not necessarily making purchases. Mobile consumerism is still very much a work in progress, but the convenience of finding a business’ Web pages while stuck in traffic or in line at the bank is a significant draw for users.

Mobile customers may not intend on making purchases directly from their smartphones, but they will very likely want to research products, compare prices or simply find a brick-and mortar establishment. You've got to make the process easy for them, or they will move to the next option without hesitation.
