Google's Even
More Important
Getting on Google in 2003
takes on bigger meaning when you consider that the company doesn't
just point to you at its
www.google.com site. The Mountain View, Calif., company also
provides search services for America Online, Yahoo, Netscape,
Earthlink and HotBot. So if you can get on Google, you're all over the
Web.
Other tips for getting on Google:
- Get your own domain name. Google says its
computers tend to gloss over homemade sites at free services such as
GeoCities.
- Register your site at dmoz.org, the "open
directory" of the Internet, which Google spiders regularly. Be
patient: Being recognized there can take months.
Building
Relevant Links
It's no longer enough for us to say
our site is popular with our visitors, if we want to earn
and keep the top rankings at the search engines we now have to prove
it. The links back to your site are
important since they can affect your link
popularity, but it isn't a simple numbers game. It's not just a case
of how many sites are linking to you, but more the
quality of sites they are!
There is little doubt about
the importance of link popularity at the
search engines, and there are several ways you may
go about boosting your rankings. Some of the techniques that are
touted to improve link popularity can actually do more harm than good,
while others offer a poor return on your investment of time.
The links that will make the biggest difference to your link
popularity are those from sites that are relevant to your site's
topic. The more sites similar to your own you can get to link to
you, the better it will be, particularly if you manage to get a
prominent link at a busy site.
How you go about getting links from such a site is another matter.
We recommend that you 'fence' 15 minutes a week and
do some research on a search engine to find
sites that may link to you and ask if they would like to exchange
links; but it is a long and laborious task. You'll
need a lot of time to plan your link exchanges and follow them up if
you want them to work.
We now offer a Links Page
service where we'll do the searching for you, send out the e-mails
to potential sites asking them to link to your site, and then create a
links page on your site. This service is labor intensive for us also
so we need to charge $270 for this service. If you would like us to
get the links for you, just e-mail us and we'll start working on
getting quality sites to link into your site.
Good Content Makes Good Sites
Content is one of the most important items
you need for your Web
site. Once visitors arrive, you need to keep them there. Adding
keyword-rich text that makes sense and serves the concept of the
Web page improves your ranking
on the search engines and keeps your
visitors interested. The more text, the better for
search engine
spiders when they index a Web
site. The search engines typically review
the first 200-250 words and the last 200-250 words. Review the
homepage of your site and see if you think it needs to be updated. If
it does, send us an e-mail with your update and we'll bring your site
up-to-speed.
New Years Gift
To start the year off properly, we took a couple
of days out and resubmitted everyone's Web site to the major
search engines and directories. Hopefully this will boost monthly hits
for your site and start the year off properly. Happy New Year.
